• Surrounded by a swarm of jack fish in Cabo Pulmo National Park, Mexico. Cabo Pulmo is the best example of a recovered reef in Mexican seas. A few years ago the fisherman of Cabo Pulmo fished all the reef to the point that fishing stopped being a way to sustain their households and life in the reef was obliterated. So they decided to totally stop fishing and few years latter the reef recovered to an astonishing level, and it is today the best example of what the Sea of Cortes used to be like

Cabo Pulmo is a unique example of the power of preserving marine hot spots, or what Sylvia Earle calls Hope Spots; by selecting and protecting strategic marine areas, the biomass of the ocean can increase rapidly and improve the overall health of the oceans.

 • Silver jacks forming a tornado shape in Cabo Pulmo, Mexico
.

Park ranger Leonardo, never gets tired of the silver jacks. This is what we call a tornado shape swarm and is not a common sight, but that day the clarity of the water was excellent, the depth ideal and there were lots of jacks, so the tornado shape appeared and the water was amazingly clear so I finally got this scene that I have envisioned for so long.
• Even though Cabo Pulmo remains healthy and in relative harmony, many international and national interest are trying hard to build mega touristic complexes near by so we need to stay alert and do our best to protect this unique place.

 • Thanks to the support of @whalesharkmexico and the lifetime work of marine biologist and videographer @erick.higuera placing satellite marks and doing photo identification of Giant Pacific Mantas in Revillagigedo, now we understand much more about the complex behavior of this amazingly smart and curious fella. They show a high fidelity to the Revillagigedo Archipelago and move frequently between the islands that encompass it, the population is at least 800 individuals and growing, also Revillagigedo is a feeding, cleaning and matting area, therefore it´s huge importance in Manta conservation. Studies like this contributed in placing Revillagigedo in the scientific and political map, so it is now being protected by Mexican Marines agains illegal fishing. Now the possibility of expanding the protected area is on sight so it could become one of the so much sought after hope spots proposed by Silvia Earle @mission_blue

 • The Gulf of Mexico, now filled with thousands of oil pumps and oil extraction platforms to feed our greedy and highly polluting oil based economy, are accountable for constant oil leakages in what it used to be a sea full of life. Adding to the oil problem, there is an alarming issue regarding the chemical fertilizers being used in agriculture that wash away to the Gulf. The irony is that some of those man made oil drilling platforms have become islands of life in the form of vertical reefs where coral, sponges, fishes of all sizes and dolphins feed. I know, something good from something very bad, but this does not justify it.

 • Originally named after a sea monster, it’s hard to see anything monster-like in this beautiful close up. Many seahorse species are endangered due to them being used in traditional medicines . Despite measures in place to protect them, millions of seahorses are still caught by accident by coastal fishing and sold on the black market.
